A Post from our Guest Bloggers Olivia & Avery

This week we made fish glyphs. This helps us learn about each other. We learned about how many brothers and sisters kids have and how many pets.  We also learned about our favorite foods.  We found out that we had a lot of things in common with each other.

One of the best things about back to school is art.  We made a project using our names.  We had to sketch it .  Then we traced it over with sharpie.  Lastly, we colored them with oil pastel.  It  was a lot of work.

Dear Team Jordan Families,

We are off to a great start!  The first few weeks of school are all about learning our routine, rules, and roles.

It will take a little time for us all to get on track with our routine. Fortunately, the children are quickly learning our schedule and how we function on a daily basis as a team.  We will discuss homework and the agenda book during parent seminar.

In order for Team Jordan to have a successful year we have established one main rule:

We will not stop other students from learning.

In order to agree upon a rule, first we all had a chance to write down what each of us as individuals thought the rules should be.  I then posted a sign stating the above rule.  We talked about each of our individual rules and decided that they all fit under the category of not stopping others from learning.  We also highlighted that we would all need to be safe, be responsible, and be respectful in order to follow our main rule.

We are working on developing our roles as “players” on Team Jordan.  The students are learning their positions.  As players they will learn their individual strengths and weaknesses.  They will come to school ready to work hard and play hard.  Each player will feel like part of the team.  He/ she will feel safe to try “new plays.”  We will practice every day.

My job as their coach is to teach them the “plays” and give corrections or feedback as necessary.  Also, I will assess their abilities and interests and use that information to help coach them.  It is my hope that each of our players feels challenged every day, because without challenge there is no improvement.

Families play a very important role on this team.  Your job is to make sure your child comes to school each day prepared for the challenges in front of them.   Please communicate with me as questions or concerns arise.   You know your child better than anyone.  We will work together to cheer and encourage our players to take risks and think of plays on their own.

I look forward to seeing you all at parent seminar on September 16th at 6pm.  Thank you very much for your support as we begin our “season” together.

Mrs. Jordan
Our team blog will be updated weekly by students and myself.

Welcome to Team Jordan

I have been spending a lot of time getting our classroom ready.  As I prepare, I hope you are beginning to prepare.  It's important that all of us get plenty of rest.  It is not fun to try to learn when your tired.  I have started to go to bed at 8:30 and I've been setting my alarm for 6am. I know how difficult it is to adjust to the school schedule after a summer of staying up late and sleeping in.

I also finished my sixth book of the summer.  I can't wait to find out about the books you have read.  I am also excited to read aloud my favorite book, The Turtle Saver to you on the first week of school.

I look forward to seeing my new team on Wednesday, September 3rd.  I think I have all your names memorized let's see if I pass the test on the first day!

Welcome Mr. John

Team Jordan is excited to add a new coach to our team.  Mr. John will be joining us for the next five weeks.  John is a senior at Masconomet and is also Ms. K's son.  He will be working in our classroom to see if becoming a teacher is the right path for him.  John is a highly motivated student and a great role model for this class.  He is going to James Madison in the fall.   Currently, John is on the Masconomet Varsity Baseball Team.  We look forward to having John in our class.

April Update & Thank you

Dear Families,

I hope that you all enjoyed open house.  It was great to see so many families.  I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Save the date:  May 30th at 9:15.  We will be having a Poetry Celebration.  At this time the children will perform for you and share some of their wonderful work.  We hope you can make it! More information will be coming home as the date gets closer.

The past few weeks have been very busy here at Steward School.  Team Jordan would like to thank the DASH volunteers for their hard work and dedication.  The parents did a great job teaching us about the different ways that the people in the deaf community live.  We enjoyed meeting K.R. and learning about her experiences as a deaf person.  She reminded us that different is not less.  She spoke to the kids about the many things that she can do.  She and her husband are story tellers and they enjoy teaching children through their stories.

We also want to thank TESTPO and the book fair volunteers. The children enjoyed choosing books for themselves and for our class.  Thanks so much to all of you who donate great literature to our class library.  I know that my current and future students will delight in reading them.

Thank you to Dr. Creeden and the Rotary Club for giving the third graders dictionaries.  These will come in handy while they read and write at home.  Encourage your child to learn a new word everyday!

Today was one of those days that a teacher dreams about.  I was truly proud of each and everyone of my students while they shared their research.  Over the past few weeks students have been researching a topic of their choice.  They asked questions, found answers, wrote, revised, edited, published, and shared.  During this time the excitement in our classroom and the computer lab was contagious.  Today it all came together as I watched twenty children take notes while one by one their classmates taught them.  I hope you can get a sense of the power of self directed learning from the pictures below.

Reid taught us about the Panda.

Will taught us about the Jaguar.

Max taught us about Tuukka Rask.

Catie shared her findings about the bottlenose dolphin.

Lucas warned us about the sea snake's poison.

Ben shared with us his findings about the poisons dart frog.

Madeline, also a Bruins fan, impressed us with facts about Bobby Orr.

Tucker enlightened us with facts about John Stockton.

Meri shared facts about Mia Hamm.

Riley shared facts about Beagles.

Emmy taught us about Nomar Garciaparra.

Interested in a Ragdoll Cat?  Amber taught us about these furry pets.

Beau presented his findings about Michael Jordan.

Felix urged us to save the Siberian Tiger because it's habitat is being destroyed.

Mason taught us about Bobby Orr.

The Silver back Gorilla was discussed in Delaney's presentation.

Julia delighted us with her diorama about the guinea pig.

Justin loves to take care of his Himalayan Cat and he shared the work that it takes.

Shaelyn taught us about the giraffe.

Elsa taught us about the Red Panda.

Remember The Alamo?  Aidan can tell you all about it.

As you can tell we have a lot of different interests.  Some of the kids want to help animals and enjoyed teaching us about them.  Others are more excited about athletes and their amazing records.  Some like to learn about historic events. Regardless of what your child studied, he or she learned that research is a lot of work and a lot of fun.

I hope that each of my players continues to ask questions and find answers!

Have a wonderful spring vacation.
