Science Exploration
Team Jordan is learning about matter. We explored using corn starch and water. First we tried to identify the matter. No tasting or smelling allowed. Students guessed flour, powered sugar, baking soda, and corn starch. Once we added water to the dry matter it changed into a liquid and the children new the white powdery solid was corn starch. We had a great time playing, investigating and discussing the properties of the new matter we had created.
Our next experiment required a bit more patience and focus. We used the Scientific method. We started by asking some questions.
What is heavier water or oil? How can we find out? What will happen when we pour water and oil into the same container?
Next, we came up with a hypothesis based on what we know.
I think ...
Scientist make careful observations and take notes. We also, record our materials and procedure. It is like a recipe and it needs to be recorded carefully.
We added food coloring to create a color explosion.
We learned that oil is lighter than water. It prevented the food coloring from mixing with the water all at once. After the oil was mixed, small amounts of food coloring leaked into the water causing a color explosion.
We are looking forward to our next opportunity to explore.
