Author visit

Today, we had a wonderful guest stop in to read to us.  Dr. O'Mara is not only an instructor at Endicott College, he is also a published author.
Visualizing  as Dr. O'Mara reads an excerpt from his book.
We are learning what good authors do so that we can become better writers.

Creating pictures with words in the readers' minds is the writer's ultimate goal.

This visit ties in perfectly with our writing standards.
Our essential question is, what do good writer's do to paint pictures in the reader's mind?
We use mentor texts to help students experience quality writing.

W3.3. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
Establish a situation and introduce a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally.

Carnation Experiment Explained by Victor

We were wondering if the carnation sucks up water through the stem to other parts of the flower, so
we decided to do an experiment.
Mrs.Jordan and her students started out with white carnations.

We put yellow, blue, purple, and green food coloring in some cups and let the colored water soak
for 2 days.

Some of the plants soaked up a lot of color at once and others took there time.

This is the shade of  blue some of our flowers will be when the color shows.

The color green is showing better then the blue, the blue only shows on the outside.
The results of our experiment proved water goes up the stem to other parts of the flower.

Welcome to Third Grade!

Team Jordan is off to a great start.  In the first two days of school we have enjoyed getting acquainted with each other and our classroom.

Thank you families for returning emergency forms, permission slips, and parent surveys as soon as possible.

Please send a family photo for your child to share.  This picture can be a drawing.  The children who brought one in shared them on Friday, and it was great to see how proud each child is of his/her family.
Homework
I will begin assigning homework this week.  Please establish a routine around homework.  The homework will always include reading.  Each month your child will bring home a reading log that should stay in their homework folder and be initialed each night. I will send home a weekly agenda in your child's homework folder. An enrichment menu will be sent home monthly beginning in October.

Please look for weekly assignments on my homework page.

Important
Please make every effort to attend Parent Night on September 16th at 6pm.
If you are unable to attend please notify me so that I can make sure you get all important information.

I look forward to partnering with you to meet the needs of your child. Please contact me at any time if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's learning.  Together we will make this a successful year for your child.
